Mimi Madrid and Nez Gonzalez are two inspirational Latine leaders and part of the team at Fortaleza Familiar, an organization dedicated to the wellness of Indigenous Chicanx Latinx Lesbian Gay Bi Queer Trans Two-Spirit young people and their families in Colorado.
Mimi is a mexica chicanx queer two-spirit writer, multimedia-maker, organizer the Executive Director of the organization.
Nez Gonzalez (he/him) is co-founder of the organization and now serves as Community Workshop Facilitator. Nez shares expertise and organizing for trans student rights in Denver high schools. He has experience creating workshops designed to educate on queer and racial identities for both youth and their families.

Mimi Madrid (he/they/she) is a mexica chicanx queer two-spirit writer, multimedia-maker, organizer and tio. Mimi’s family roots start in Northern Mexico in the states of Chihuahua y Durango—homelands of her grandmas Dolores Puga y Rosa Torres. Mimi was born in El Paso, Texas and raised in so-called Denver, Colorado—the ancestral lands of the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho people.
Mimi's worked more than a decade in reproductive justice, youth leadership and LGBTQ+ liberation movements. Mimi’s focus is the development, implementation, and evaluation of cultural, wellness, and safety community programs, events, and curriculum. He’s worked with organizations around Denver that center LGBTQ folks, indigenous young people, survivors of violence, immigrant families, and communities of color.

Amalia Martino is Founder and President of The Vida Agency, a multi-service and multi-cultural company that works to advance racial equity in the Northwest. Her agency helps clients learn how to include and center the voices of people traditionally left out through innovative communications and public relations strategies. Amalia’s leadership amplifies the voices of the unheard and underserved and builds authentic bridges between our clients, the media, and community.
Season 3- Episode 16: Carolina Mejias Rivera - Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción.
Peter and Tania talk to Carolina about her work with Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción.
Carolina Mejías Rivera es Gestora Cultural y Recreacionista. Tiene un bachillerato en Ciencias Sociales con concentración en Ciencias Políticas, segunda concentración en Recreación y una secuencia curricular en Cooperativismo; además, cuenta con una maestría en Gestión y Administración Cultural, ambos en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras.
A lo largo de su carrera profesional ha desarrollado proyectos en los que involucra a las comunidades con el acceso universitario. Creó la iniciativa Impacto Recreativo, un proyecto que pretendía llevar talleres de arte y deportes a las escuelas como método para que los estudiantes se motivaran a entrar a la universidad. Posteriormente, desarrolló un proyecto similar llamado Puerto Rico Extreme Soccer que utilizaba el deporte del balompié como método para entrar a las universidades. Desde el 2012, forma parte de la organización Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción, donde ha desarrollado diversos programas como Mentes Pal Cambio, un programa de liderazgo y mentoría pre-universitaria para jóvenes de escuela superior; el programa #EnAcción que surge luego del huracán María, que consistió en insertar jóvenes universitarios y profesionales a comunidades para que sirvieran de facilitadores comunitarios; y que se ha transformado el mismo en un Laboratorio de Acción Cívica para jóvenes que quieran generar soluciones a retos sistémicos del país. Ha sido seleccionada para presentar los resultados de su trabajo en foros en Lima, Perú y Quito, Ecuador. En ambos programas ha recibido reconocimientos por su trabajo en la prensa como El Nuevo Día, Primera Hora y la revista Magacín.
A partir del 2022, asumió el rol de Directora Ejecutiva de Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción (MPA), donde ha logrado $4,109,351.20 de aporte social económico para la sostenibilidad del tercer sector y las comunidades a través de los programas; activó 769 voluntaries para atender la emergencia luego del Huracán Fiona que atravesó el país; y ha sido una voz para la fuerza laboral emergente en diversos foros en universidades, asociaciones de cooperativas, gremios gubernamentales, espacios filantrópicos y prensa radial. De igual forma, ha colaborado con organizaciones fuera de Puerto Rico como Unidos US, participando como panelista en Workforce Development Summit 2022; y en Migrant Cliniciants Network desarrollando un currículo de Liderazgo y Abogacía para las comunidades agrícolas de Puerto Rico e Islas Vírgenes.
Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción (MPA) es una organización sin fines de lucro 501c3 que trabaja para dar paso a una nueva generación de líderes comprometidos con la justicia social y capaces de afrontar los retos de Puerto Rico.

Marcela Díaz is the Founding Executive Director of Somos Un Pueblo Unido, a statewide immigrant-based organization that works to promote racial and worker justice in New Mexico. Through its community organizing, electoral engagement, litigation, and policy advocacy efforts, Somos has helped shape New Mexico’s immigrant and worker’s rights landscape for over two decades. With Marcela's leadership, the organization has spearheaded several local and statewide laws and has won dozens of awards for its grassroots work.
Season 3- Episode 14: Angela Armendariz - A Youth Leader
Peter and Tania speak to Angela about her youth leadership and wisdom.
Angela Armendariz is an inspiring Latine youth leader from Mexico. From a young age she became aware of the social challenges and barriers to BIPOC people in the United States and stepped into her leadership journey organizing students to create supportive and caring community with other Latine youth. She attends Olympic College earning college credit while completing her high school diploma and creating the first Latine student organization in the institutions.
Season 3- Episode 13: Mark Magaña - Latine Environmental Leader
Mark Magaña is the Founding President & CEO of GreenLatinos, a National network of Latino environmental and conservation advocates.
Mark is the first Latino to have served as senior staff at both the White House and in Congressional leadership – as Special Assistant to President Clinton for White House Legislative Affairs and several other influential leadership roles at federal, state and local levels.
Mark also founded the National Latinos for Obama in which he helped build a national grassroots organization and mobilization effort.
He serves on the boards of the League of Conservation Voters, Green 2.0, and the Children’s Environmental Health Network.

Jennifer Allen Aroz is dedicated to supporting the collective power of Latine community leaders to influence policy that serves the community's needs. She founded the Border Action Network in 2001 where she served as the Executive Director for a decade influencing immigration policy both in Arizona and nationally. Her leadership has influenced many across Southern Arizona and nationally when she has served on the board of directors of GreenLatinos, the City of Tucson’s Commission on Climate, Energy and Sustainability, League of Conservation Voters, ACLU, and Las Adelitas Arizona, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to promoting Latina civic participation and encouraging Latinas and other women of color to run for public office.
Jennifer is a Senior Vice President at the League of Conservation Voters where she leads LCV’s Community and Civic Engagement department. She joined LCV in 2013 to develop Chispa (“spark” in Spanish), a national community organizing program that builds the capacity of Latino families to influence policy makers and pressure polluters to protect communities’ rights to clean air and water, healthy neighborhoods and a safe climate for generations to come.

Season 3- Episode 10: José Calderón and leadership trajectory.
Tania and Peter talk to José about his Leadership
José Calderón is the former President of the Hispanic Federation (HF), the nation’s premier Latino nonprofit membership organization. José manages HF’s overall operations with a primary focus on strategic planning, program development, public policy advocacy and resource development. He is a leading advocate for Hispanic grassroots organizations and pro-Latino legislation locally and nationwide.
José has worked in various capacities for the Federation since 2001, including Program Coordinator, Program Director, Vice President and Senior Vice President. During that time, he has helped develop and launch several of HF’s most important initiatives including its Latino College Success Program, Workforce Development ABLE project, Board Leadership Development Initiative, DREAMers Scholarship Fund, Diabetes Awareness Campaign, Latino Immigration Task Force, among others. He has also spearheaded HF’s civic engagement efforts, helping to register and mobilize hundreds of thousands of voters in key federal and local elections over the last decade.
As the Federation's principal spokesperson, José works to disseminate the organization's public policy positions to the media, public officials, the private sector and the community at large. Through public hearings, weekly newspaper columns and Federation-produced radio and television shows, he also works to educate Latinos about issues and services of critical importance to them and their families.
José currently serves as Co-Chair of the Immigration Committee of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of the leading Latino organizations in the nation. He also serves on the advisory committee for The Aspen Institute’s Roundtable on Community Change. A recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, José is most proud and grateful for the continued support and acknowledgments he receives from HF's network of Latino nonprofits.
José received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hunter College and a Master of Arts Degree from St. John’s University with a concentration in Latin American studies, Spanish literature and political science. He is married and a proud father of two daughters.

They also discuss the traditions for the Latine community of the guests interviewed this season. Which are the traditions that are worth continuing to pass on in the Latine community. The importance of resting and recharging energy to continue to follow our passions. Resting is not being selfish, it is self-love.

She has two decades of community organizing experience, and is responsible for raising a multi-million dollar budget, co-developing TOP’s overall strategy to create and win on our economic and racial justice policy agenda in Texas’ 3 largest metro areas, as well as leading TOP’s voter engagement program--the largest independent grassroots program in Texas--which has mobilized more than 3.2 million Black and Latino voters to the ballot box across the state. Michelle has been recognized numerous times locally and nationally for her leadership in the progressive movement, including: in Mother Jones as one of 8 women leading the resistance in Texas (2017), in Texas Monthly’s 2018 Power Issue, along with Brianna Brown, as one of 31 Texans taking charge, and as one of She The People’s 20 Women of Color in Politics to Watch in 2020, which was also featured in Elle Magazine.

After reflecting about our losses of many elders in our community from the pandemic, we decided to focus season three on how Latine Leadership can benefit from both elders' knowledge and youth’s knowledge.
We believe that we can both learn from our Latine elders and our youth leader’s knowledge.
How can we learn from both and become stronger together?
How do we unite both sources of Latine leadership ideas and knowledge?
How do we pass our elders' knowledge before it is lost and how do we empower our youth?
Peter interviews his mom to share the knowledge and his lived experiences and the impact his mother had in his leadership.
